Steel Road Plates: What They're For and How to Choose the Right One

Steel road plates are one of the simplest, most reliable ways to keep a site moving. When a trench, excavation or service pit sits across a traffic path, a road plate bridges it, so vehicles, plant and pedestrians can keep crossing safely while the work below continues.

This guide covers what a steel road plate actually does, when to use one, and how to choose the right plate for the job.

What is a steel road plate?

A steel road plate is a heavy-duty steel sheet laid over an opening to create a temporary trafficable surface.

Instead of closing a road or access route while a trench is open, you cover it with a plate so traffic can continue over the top. Once the work is finished, the plate is lifted out and the surface reinstated.

They are a staple of civil, utility and construction work because they are reusable, fast to deploy and strong enough to carry site traffic when the right plate is specified for the load.

When to use a steel road plate

Road plates earn their place wherever access has to continue over an opening. Common uses include:

  • Temporary vehicle access over trenches and excavations
  • Civil and utility works, including water, gas, electrical and telecommunications
  • Construction-site vehicle and plant access
  • Road openings and work zones
  • Covering open works overnight or between shifts, where the site has to stay accessible

If the opening only needs pedestrian access, or the loads are light and occasional, a smaller or thinner plate may do. If heavy plant or loaded trucks are crossing, the plate, and how it is supported and restrained, becomes a real engineering decision, not just a matter of grabbing whatever is on the truck.

Choosing the right plate

Getting the plate right comes down to a few factors working together:

  • Load: the heaviest vehicle or piece of plant that will cross, including axle loads.
  • Span: the unsupported distance the plate has to bridge. A plate that is fine over a narrow trench can be badly under-specified over a wide one.
  • Thickness and size: thicker plate carries more and spans further, and the footprint needs to overlap firm ground on each side.
  • Support and restraint: how the plate bears on the surrounding surface, and how it is fixed or ramped so it cannot shift under traffic.
  • Surface and conditions: traffic speed, weather and whether extra grip is needed.

The standard RAPTA heavy-duty steel road plates are 2400 × 1200 × 25mm, Australian-made, with six 30mm fixing holes so the plate can be secured or restrained to suit the installation. Other sizes and thicknesses are available on request, so the plate can be matched to the span and loading rather than forcing the job to fit a stock size.

Handling them safely

Road plates are heavy, and how you move them matters.

Every RAPTA plate includes a 5t WLL weld-in lifting point as standard, so it can be handled from above with a compatible road plate lifter rather than crews reaching underneath or levering with crowbars. Using the dedicated plate lifter keeps handling controlled and repeatable across a project.

An optional yellow anti-slip coating is available where the surface treatment suits the application and traffic conditions.

Getting it right for your site

A road plate is only as good as the whole installation around it.

The plate, its thickness and size, the bearing and edge support, the restraint method, the traffic and the site conditions all work together, and the requirements can vary by project and by the relevant road authority.
